It’s bad enough that we have cut down all of Smokey the Bear’s Forests, polluted Yogi’s national parks and paved over Winnie the Pooh’s Hundred Acre woods. Since we’re already running our bears out of their homes, does that mean we literally have to “run” over them as well?
Apparently a bicyclist in Boulder, Colorado thinks so!
Tim Egan was riding his bike 45 mph down a popular road when he ran smack into a 6 foot tall, 500 pound bear. Both him and his bike flipped over the bear and hit the pavement hard.
Someone who just may become the next president of the United States not only proves that he is an advocate for change, but he also advocates listening to good music.
I recently read an article on CNN that shared what was on Barack Obama’s iPod. Since I consider myself to have relatively good taste in music, I was pleasantly surprised at what he listened to. His taste ranged from Bob Dylan and Jay Z to The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder.
But, even though he thinks that rap artists, like Ludacris, have broken many boundaries (just like he would be doing if he became President), he does agree that certain rap lyrics are troubling.
I truly think that the type of music a person listens to is a reflection of the type of person they are. I think the more willing they are to listen to a wider variety of musical styles, the more likely they are to accept broader ideas as a whole. And those ideas include changes in how we tackle global warming and foreign oil issues.
So with that being said, Obama, you keep listening to your iPod full of diverse music, and we’ll keep listening to what you have to say.
Cliffs are some of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world. They’re actually one of the few things left in nature that men have not cut down, burned or paved over.
Most importantly, cliffs have been used in some of the greatest scenes in movie history. Remember Thelma and Louise’s infamous head-first dive off a cliff? Or how Wayne and Garth emulated that in Wayne’s World 2?
Or when Ferris Bueller’s best friend Cameron accidentally pushed his father’s beloved sports car into the bottom of a ravine? Or when Sylvester Stallone battled bad guys in Cliffhanger (yeah, I barely remembered that one as well).
Cliff jumps are supposed to be cool. That’s why I was so bothered when I read that a 17-year-old boy in Colorado Springs drove his car off of Pikes Peak….over his girlfriend breaking up with him!
Now I can’t lie, I liked the New Kids on the Block. I was a rebel and drooled over bad boy Donnie Wahlberg (who was surprisingly good in the Emmy Award-winning series Band of Brothers and disappointingly bad in the Saw sequels), while many of my friends dreamed about Joey and his baby blues.
And of course I was very excited about the reunion tour (though I doubt I will pay $95 for a ticket). It’s just good to know that they’re making music together again.
On Saturday, June 7 of this year, a free concert was held in Yokohama, Japan. So besides being free, what else was so great about it?
Well, the entire power for the concert was generated by the concert-goers!
Titled the “Yokohama Human Powered Concert: Power Saving Saves the Earth,” this concert used four old refurbished bicycles that people would ride to generate the power. This power was supplied to the PA system and other stage equipment.
There was even a solar-powered cooking demonstration!
Here’s the poster:
Okay, all fans didn’t have to pedal for power. Volunteers were asked to do this, and many happily accepted.
I can only imagine if fans in the U.S. would be able to do this. We environmentalist love to help out the environment, but when it comes to exercise, that’s a whole other subject.
If you don’t know who Captain Planet is, then you must be from another planet! Captain Planet and his Planeteers graced our t.v. screens in the early 1990’s to entertain and educate audiences about the importance of protecting our planet. Even though he had blue skin and a green mullet, he was still the hippest superhero around.
So why did Hollywood never make a movie about Captain Planet? Now would be the perfect time to praise the environmental awareness that Captain Planet brings to families everywhere, especially with the threat of global warming and a continued rise in greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
Since no movie has ever been made, I decided to pick my top 2 candidates for the role of Captain Planet. I’ll list the pros for both, so you can decide!
It seems that every celebrity nowadays has his or her own “side business” going on. George Foreman has his grills. Lil’ Wayne has his as well. J-lo has her clothing line. Scarlett Johansson has an album (with horrible reviews). Keanu Reeves and Jared Leo have their own band. Donald Trump has….everything.
I really like the celebrities that endorse eco-friendly products. Especially food products, because everyone likes food. Look at Paul Newman and his salad dressing. Very tasty stuff.
So I decided to make up a few of my own organic products that would be endorsed by celebrities. Yes, you thought I was crazy when I said that Amy Winehouse would make a good eco-spokesperson. But when you read my post you were convinced. Right?
Well if you weren’t before, now you will be. I will convince you that these celebrities could one day endorse organic food products.
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to drive to your parents’ house on the weekend, or take a trip to the beach with your best buddies, without worrying if you’ll have enough money to make it back?
Today’s gas prices are out of control, and they’re going to be that way for at least another year.
So I got to thinking about how nice it would be if we had some modes of long distance transportation that didn’t rely on non-renewable resources. Like the cool cars and gadgets we’ve seen in some of our favorite movies.
I decided to make a list of the “Top 5 Pop Culture Vehicles That Don’t Use $4 Per Gallon of Gas and Pollute the Air with Carbon Dioxide.”
Sheryl Crow is a huge advocate of preserving the trees in our environment.
In a USAToday blog she recently stated,”I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don’t want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required. When presenting this idea to my younger brother, who’s judgment I trust implicitly, he proposed taking it one step further. I believe his quote was, “how bout just washing the one square out.”
So what do you think she would say about the winner and other contestants of the 4th annual toilet paper contest? This “plush” event was hosted in New York by Ripley’s Believe it or Not, where the final three designers squared off for a $1,000 grant prize.
Pop culture loves dogs. From Lassie and Underdog to the cute canines on The Dog Whisperer, there will always be a place in our hearts for dogs.
But most people don’t realize just how much of a benefit to the environment dogs are. Yes, they tear up your newly planted flowerbed, but they also leave fresh “fertilizer” on the ground to help them grow again. Right?
And dogs are actually the best landfills in the world for waste because they eat most of the waste that we would otherwise throw away.
Or they become compost machines and bury the waste in the yard, which either decomposes or is never found. Voila, no waste!
Or they just look adorable running through a park and give the planet something worth fighting for.
I’m lucky to have one of those dogs that makes me want to fight for her right to be cute. Her name is Isabella, and even though she snores in her sleep and releases gas when she’s awake, I love her nonetheless.
It’s called “Lights Out,” by New York native Santogold. The song could be referring to turning off the lights to save energy. Or not. Regardless, it’s still a great song!
