Canadian Scientists Discover How to Reduce Methane Emissions of Cows

Posted: December 7, 2008 – 2:33 pm

Every day more people in our nation are learning about “the green movement” thanks to a newly elected President who pushes for environmental education and an old President who ruined many people’s environments.

But this learning is not just happening in the US: it’s also happening to our neighbors in Canada. Scientists at the University of Manatoba in Winnipeg have figured out how to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions emitted by cows every day…by up to 200 litres!

A Presidential Pardon for a Puppy!

Posted: December 3, 2008 – 9:51 am

Everyone knows that soon-to-be President Barack Obama is looking to add a puppy to his family. The puppy might just add a little ray of sunshine to the gloomy job of economic restoration that Obama faces in the next 4 years to come.

Watch Obama endorse pet adoption:

The only drawback of puppy adoption for Obama is that he thinks dogs from shelters might not be the best bet for his daughter’s allergies.

No Longer on the Menu: Bluefin Tuna

Posted: November 20, 2008 – 7:43 am

Do you care enough about the Mediterranean bluefin tuna to boycott it completely? That means not eating it, selling it or cooking it?

Well, about 16,000 citizens from 149 countries have decided to do just that.

WWF has created a petition, which was signed by 15,941people, to present to the Contracting Parties of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

They hope that the Commission  will make sure that the fish is no longer sold in restaurants or markets so that it will have time to repopulate and properly breed in fisheres. This will save the species from going completely extinct.

Small Fish Endangered Due to Overproduction of Animal Feed

Posted: October 31, 2008 – 6:21 am

I had no idea that humans use up to one-third of all fish in the ocean to produce animal feed.

Even though the fish that are being used to feed chickens, pigs and farm-raised fish are small, like anchovies, scientists are beginning to see how this can drastically affect both marine and human life.

Why is this so alarming?

  • Ninety percent of the 31.5 million tons of fish that are caught are used for fish meal or fish oil. This endangers the other marine life and birds who feed on the small fish.
  • It takes 5 pounds of this fish meal to produce only 1 pound of a farm-raised fish. Why do we have to waste 4 pounds of good fish?

Scientists believe we can solve this problem by having humans consume the extra 4 pounds of fish. But since these fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, we would have to monitor how much we consume.

Do you agree with this solution, or do you have a better idea?

Palin’s Ad Doesn’t Cry Wolf, It Makes the Wolves Cry

Posted: October 19, 2008 – 10:46 am

To reiterate the message from my post Sarah Palin’s Office is Dedicated to Protecting Animals…or Not, check out this YouTube video that was sent to me from a friend on the Care2 network. It shows Palin’s stance on aerial wolf hunting:

If we want someone in office who truly cares about the environment and all of its living creatures, maybe we should not support someone who wants to im-Palin them with a stake through the heart!

Sarah Palin’s Office is Dedicated to Protecting Animals…or Not.

Posted: October 17, 2008 – 6:59 am

Reading The New York Times I recently came across this picture of Sarah Palin sitting in her office in Anchorage, Alaska.

I must say I was surprised to see her choice of decor…but then again she is a member of the NRA.

Phillies Centerfielder Gets Some “Beef” from PETA for Loving Spam

Posted: October 16, 2008 – 8:13 am

Who would have guessed that after I wrote a post about peta2 and their intern CutoutDissection.com that I would come across another PETA story?

Well, this one has to do with Philadelphia Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino and his love for the canned meat product Spam.

Looks like PETA didn’t like Victorino declaring his love for Spam musubi, which is very popular in his native Hawaii. (Read all about the history of Spam musubi here)

If you’ve never heard of the band Cake, then you’re missing out on some truly classic music.

Some of my favorite Cake songs include:

Not only does the band have great songs, but they also follow great green initiatives.

They recently hired the Borrego Solar company to install solar panels on their recording studio in Sacramento.

Fish sticks, fish fillets and fish…pedicures?

Posted: July 21, 2008 – 10:16 am

Would you ever pay $140 for a pedicure? Well, apparently celebrities like Naomi Campbell and Gwyneth Paltrow do. They get their feet glamorized by pedicurist Bastien Gonzalez, who makes quite a killing on his pedicures/massages.

Well, for less than half that amount you could get an eco-pedicure – literally – from Yvonne Hair and Nails salon in Alexandria, Virginia.

So what’s so eco about this salon? Instead of using sharp razors to scrape away the dead skin on your feet, the pedicurists use tiny carp!

Cows and Their Greenhouse Gaseous By-Products

Posted: July 10, 2008 – 11:32 am

We’ve all seen the Got Milk? ads that show some of the most popular celebrities wearing milk mustaches. And we all know that when celebrities endorse something, it has got to be good for us, right?

Well, there’s something else from cows that could be good for us and the environment the more that we learn about it, but it’s nowhere near as tasty as milk.

Scientists in Buenos Aires have recently discovered that the methane released from cow burps could be responsible for 30% of Argentina’s greenhouse gas emissions! That’s because one cow weighing up to 550 kg can produce up to 1,000 liters of methane emissions a day!

When Cloning a Dog is a Good Idea

Posted: July 3, 2008 – 8:08 am

Dogs we wish we could clone: Benji. Underdog. Balto. Lassie. Scooby Doo. Beethoven. Deputy Dawg. Trakr?

If you’re wondering who Trakr is, he’s one of the dogs who sniffed out survivors of the New York World Trade Center catastrophe back in 2001. He actually located the last living survivor, who was trapped 30 feet under debris.

That definitely makes him clone-worthy.

Now that Trakr is 15 years old and can no longer use his back legs because of a degenerative neurological disorder (which may have been caused by the toxic fumes from the smoke of the 9/11), he is the lucky winner of a new cloning project conducted by BioArts International.

BioArts will transport a sample of Trakr’s DNA to the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in South Korea, which should be ready to clone by the end of the year.

Bicycling + Bears = Bad Combination

Posted: June 28, 2008 – 2:29 pm

It’s bad enough that we have cut down all of Smokey the Bear’s Forests, polluted Yogi’s national parks and paved over Winnie the Pooh’s Hundred Acre woods. Since we’re already running our bears out of their homes, does that mean we literally have to “run” over them as well?

Apparently a bicyclist in Boulder, Colorado thinks so!

Tim Egan was riding his bike 45 mph down a popular road when he ran smack into a 6 foot tall, 500 pound bear. Both him and his bike flipped over the bear and hit the pavement hard.

Cute or Ugly, Dogs Are Good for the Environment

Posted: June 22, 2008 – 7:36 am

Pop culture loves dogs. From Lassie and Underdog to the cute canines on The Dog Whisperer, there will always be a place in our hearts for dogs.

But most people don’t realize just how much of a benefit to the environment dogs are. Yes, they tear up your newly planted flowerbed, but they also leave fresh “fertilizer” on the ground to help them grow again. Right?

And dogs are actually the best landfills in the world for waste because they eat most of the waste that we would otherwise throw away.

Or they become compost machines and bury the waste in the yard, which either decomposes or is never found. Voila, no waste!

Or they just look adorable running through a park and give the planet something worth fighting for.

I’m lucky to have one of those dogs that makes me want to fight for her right to be cute. Her name is Isabella, and even though she snores in her sleep and releases gas when she’s awake, I love her nonetheless.
