New Kids on the Block: Good New Song, Bad Eco Message

Good news: NKOTB are back!

Bad news: Their new video is NOT eco-friendly.

Now I can’t lie, I liked the New Kids on the Block. I was a rebel and drooled over bad boy Donnie Wahlberg (who was surprisingly good in the Emmy Award-winning series Band of Brothers and disappointingly bad in the Saw sequels), while many of my friends dreamed about Joey and his baby blues.

And of course I was very excited about the reunion tour (though I doubt I will pay $95 for a ticket). It’s just good to know that they’re making music together again.

Their new song “Summertime” is very poppy. It’s pretty good for them. Take a listen:

What’s not good is how Donnie opens the video by jumping into a helicopter, Joey is lounging on a huge yacht and Jordan and Jon are cruising around in sports cars! All of these things are huge gas consumers and contribute to carbon dioxide pollution.

At least Danny was protecting the planet as he was running around in the wild and enjoying the beauty of nature. But did anyone ever care about Danny anyways?

Yes, the Kids do shoot a lot of the video on a beach and in some sort of bamboo hut, which is great. But why couldn’t they be that simple throughout the entire video? I just don’t get how adding “bling” and expensive vehicles to a video makes you cool (and for the record, I would never say that to Lil’ Wayne’s face).

I just hope that besides promoting air pollution and causing fans to go broke from buying tickets, the now “Old Kids” will use their popularity to do something good for the environment.

And that doesn’t include a line of organic bed sheets or buttons made from recycled paper and plastic.
