Life After People: A History Channel Documentary

Posted: November 11, 2008 – 7:16 am

I admit it, I actually like watching the History Channel. Not just because it shows great documentaries about World War II and Nostradamus, but also because it educates people about the environment.

There is an amazing documentary titled Life After People that you absolutely should watch. It goes 5, 10, 20 and hundreds of years into a future without humans.

Just by watching it I’ve learned:

How to Help the Environment and Humanitarian Efforts When You’re Poor.

Posted: October 29, 2008 – 10:49 am

Most environmental and humanitarian efforts ask for dollar donations to help with their efforts, but if you’re like me and don’t have any extra money, you may feel like you can’t make a difference.

But I actually found a few great sites that will donate food, money and other valuables to their efforts just by making a few clicks on the computer. Here are my favorites:

Free Rice is an online quiz that lets you strengthen your English vocabulary. For every correct defintion that you pick 20 grains of rice will be donated to the United Nations World Food Program.

New Kids on the Block: Good New Song, Bad Eco Message

Posted: June 25, 2008 – 5:13 pm

Good news: NKOTB are back!

Bad news: Their new video is NOT eco-friendly.

Now I can’t lie, I liked the New Kids on the Block. I was a rebel and drooled over bad boy Donnie Wahlberg (who was surprisingly good in the Emmy Award-winning series Band of Brothers and disappointingly bad in the Saw sequels), while many of my friends dreamed about Joey and his baby blues.

And of course I was very excited about the reunion tour (though I doubt I will pay $95 for a ticket). It’s just good to know that they’re making music together again.

And the Role of Captain Planet Goes to…..Al Gore or Leonardo DiCaprio?

Posted: June 24, 2008 – 5:40 pm

If you don’t know who Captain Planet is, then you must be from another planet! Captain Planet and his Planeteers graced our t.v. screens in the early 1990’s to entertain and educate audiences about the importance of protecting our planet. Even though he had blue skin and a green mullet, he was still the hippest superhero around.

So why did Hollywood never make a movie about Captain Planet? Now would be the perfect time to praise the environmental awareness that Captain Planet brings to families everywhere, especially with the threat of global warming and a continued rise in greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

Since no movie has ever been made, I decided to pick my top 2 candidates for the role of Captain Planet. I’ll list the pros for both, so you can decide!

Sheryl Crow Would Not Be Happy With the Winner of the 4th Annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest

Posted: June 22, 2008 – 9:29 am

Sheryl Crow is a huge advocate of preserving the trees in our environment.

In a USAToday blog she recently stated,”I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don’t want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required. When presenting this idea to my younger brother, who’s judgment I trust implicitly, he proposed taking it one step further. I believe his quote was, “how bout just washing the one square out.”

So what do you think she would say about the winner and other contestants of the 4th annual toilet paper contest? This “plush” event was hosted in New York by Ripley’s Believe it or Not, where the final three designers squared off for a $1,000 grant prize.

Cute or Ugly, Dogs Are Good for the Environment

Posted: June 22, 2008 – 7:36 am

Pop culture loves dogs. From Lassie and Underdog to the cute canines on The Dog Whisperer, there will always be a place in our hearts for dogs.

But most people don’t realize just how much of a benefit to the environment dogs are. Yes, they tear up your newly planted flowerbed, but they also leave fresh “fertilizer” on the ground to help them grow again. Right?

And dogs are actually the best landfills in the world for waste because they eat most of the waste that we would otherwise throw away.

Or they become compost machines and bury the waste in the yard, which either decomposes or is never found. Voila, no waste!

Or they just look adorable running through a park and give the planet something worth fighting for.

I’m lucky to have one of those dogs that makes me want to fight for her right to be cute. Her name is Isabella, and even though she snores in her sleep and releases gas when she’s awake, I love her nonetheless.

10 Big CO2 Emitting Movies from the Last 2 Decades

Posted: June 15, 2008 – 4:26 pm

I admit it: I’m an adrenaline-pumping, horrible plot but lots of car chases and bar fight scenes loving, cheesy action movie junkie. I saw Armageddon … and liked it. A lot. And this morning I was watching The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift . It’s a guilty pleasure of mine.

There’s just something mindlessly numbing but completely entertaining about watching cars that I know I’ll never own driven by Japanese gangsters that are way to cool to ever talk to me. Oh, and Lil’ Bow Wow is in the movie. And you can’t go wrong with Lil’ Bow Wow.

But as I watched the cars “drift in Tokyo” I got to thinking just how much CO2 was emitted to film the movie. Most movies take months or years to film, and to get that perfect scene you have to film them over and over again. So that means more gas wasted and more pollution in the air. Take me out to the solar heated ballgame

Posted: June 11, 2008 – 11:49 pm

Since I’ve moved to Baltimore, there are a few things that I’ve learned to love:

  • Old Bay seasoning
  • Hearing people say “warshing” machine
  • Seeing Mexi-mullets in Fells Point
  • The Resurrection beer at Brewer’s Art
  • Chicken cheesesteak subs from Never on Sunday
  • The Baltimore Orioles!

Of all of these things, I am most obsessed with the Baltimore Orioles. I think I’ve watched every game since the season started. My favorite players are Kevin Millar, Adam Jones and Melvin Mora. Yes, I like Nick Markakis, but so does everyone else. Read the rest of this entry »

The Incredible Hulk Carbon Calculator

Posted: June 11, 2008 – 9:32 pm

Only 2 days after writing my first post on green characters, I found this: The Incredible Hulk Carbon Calculator!

This is beyond cool! Not only do comic fans get to see Ed Norton go even more ballistic than he did in Fight Club and teenage boys get to see Liv Tyler play, yet again, another slow-witted yet angelic love interest, but eco-friendly fans can learn how to reduce their carbon footprint. Oscar the Grouch and other green characters

Posted: June 6, 2008 – 8:58 pm

When I was younger I remember that all my friends liked the cute cartoon characters that were associated with the colors of red, pink or purple… or some other horribly bright girly color. I guess that’s why Strawberry Shortcake, Barbie, Elmo, Big Bird and those adorable My Little Ponies were so popular.

But being the tomboy that I was, I was always drawn to colors like blue, black and green. I loved the Smurfs and their evil tormentor Gargamel, who looked more like a goofy Adams Family character than an evil sorcerer.

I also happened to like green characters, like Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the Frog, the Grinch and the Incredible Hulk. Maybe that’s why I got drawn into the green movement. Read the rest of this entry »
