The Queen Goes Green!

According to an article in The Earth Times, Queen Elizabeth II has recently bought the world’s largest windmill for an undisclosed amount (which I’m guessing is ridiculously expensive).

This windmill is going to be built by Clipper Windpower, a wind turbine manufacturer based out of Carpinteria, California.

The best thing about the windmill: it will reduce over 724,000 tons of carbon dioxide in its lifetime. That’s because it’s going to be the length of two soccer fields and will be 574 feet high.

This is a great move for the Queen, who is proving that money isn’t the only green thing that royalty is concerned with.

Oil Spills: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Posted: August 8, 2008 – 7:51 am

In 2006 50,000 gallons of industrial fuel leaked from a tanker when it sank off the central island of Guimaras, which is next to the Philippines.

This affected over 40,000 people and 120 miles of coastline, forcing families to flee because of the overwhelming stench and high levels of hydrogen sulfide (which can poison the central nervous system), benzene (can damage bone marrow and lead to anemia) and toluene (can lead to respiratory problems).

So what did the people of the Philippines use to clean up the oil spill? Human hair!

And what better place to get hair from humans who don’t really need it than a maximum security prison.

It’s a Sad Day When Airlines Must Take Away In-Flight Movies

Posted: July 11, 2008 – 8:04 am

What will happen to the future of cinematic pop culture once airlines take away in-flight movies? Well, I guess that will force more people to read a book, go to sleep or listen to their iPods.

US Airways stated that it will stop offering in-flight movies on domestic flights this fall to cut expenses. This is mainly due to the already expensive cost of fuel.

Apparently nontheatrical distribution to airlines accounts for more than 80% of the total $25 million or more in revenue that each studio makes per year.

Driving Off a Cliff: Cool in the Movies, But Not in Real Life

Posted: June 26, 2008 – 1:50 pm

Cliffs are some of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world. They’re actually one of the few things left in nature that men have not cut down, burned or paved over.

Most importantly, cliffs have been used in some of the greatest scenes in movie history. Remember Thelma and Louise’s infamous head-first dive off a cliff? Or how Wayne and Garth emulated that in Wayne’s World 2?

Or when Ferris Bueller’s best friend Cameron accidentally pushed his father’s beloved sports car into the bottom of a ravine? Or when Sylvester Stallone battled bad guys in Cliffhanger (yeah, I barely remembered that one as well).

Cliff jumps are supposed to be cool. That’s why I was so bothered when I read that a 17-year-old boy in Colorado Springs drove his car off of Pikes Peak….over his girlfriend breaking up with him!
